Lime Paint.
Natural, Breathable,
Beautifully Simple.

An ancient finish rooted in the earth — pure lime, honest texture, lasting depth.

Lime paint is one of the oldest wall finishes in the world. Made from natural lime, it creates a soft, matte surface with organic depth that synthetic paints simply cannot replicate — and unlike modern paints, it breathes.

A note from Amy

Lime paint is a beautiful finish — but for most interior projects, Amy recommends Venetian plaster instead. It offers greater longevity, superior depth, and a more durable result. That said, lime paint is the right choice for certain projects, and Amy is happy to advise on which is best for yours.

What is Lime Paint?

One of the World's
Oldest Natural Wall Finishes

Lime paint — also known as limewash — is made from slaked lime mixed with water and natural pigments. It's been used on walls for thousands of years, from ancient Rome to traditional European farmhouses. The result is a soft, matte finish with a subtle, chalky depth that shifts beautifully with light.

Unlike synthetic paints that sit on top of a surface, lime paint penetrates and bonds with masonry and plaster. This allows walls to breathe naturally — releasing moisture rather than trapping it — which helps prevent damp and mold in Oregon's climate.

The organic, slightly irregular texture of lime paint is what makes it so distinctive. No two walls look exactly the same, and that's the point.

Amy's recommendation

"Lime paint is genuinely beautiful, especially on exterior masonry or in rooms where you want a very soft, understated finish. But for most interior walls, I recommend Venetian plaster — it has the same natural lime base with far greater depth, durability, and longevity. I'm always happy to talk through which is right for your project."

When Lime Paint Makes Sense

The Right Finish
for the Right Project

Exterior Masonry

Lime paint was made for exterior brick, stone, and render. It bonds naturally, allows moisture to escape, and weathers beautifully over time — unlike exterior emulsions that peel and crack.

Older or Historic Homes

Pre-1950s homes with solid masonry walls need breathable finishes. Modern paints can trap moisture and cause damp. Lime paint is the historically correct and technically appropriate choice for period properties.

Soft, Understated Interiors

When the goal is a very gentle, chalky matte — not a polished or textured statement — lime paint delivers a quiet, organic softness that's ideal for bedrooms, hallways, and ancillary spaces.

Natural & Eco-Conscious Projects

Zero VOCs, fully biodegradable, made from natural limestone. For projects where the health of the building and its occupants is a priority, lime paint is one of the cleanest finishes available.

Why Choose Lime Paint

What Makes It Worth Considering

Completely Breathable

Lime paint allows moisture to pass through walls naturally. In Oregon's damp climate this matters — trapped moisture causes damp, mold, and structural damage. Lime paint lets your walls breathe.

Zero VOCs

Made from natural limestone with no synthetic binders or solvents. The healthiest wall finish available for indoor air quality, especially important for bedrooms, nurseries, and allergy-sensitive households.

Naturally Mold-Resistant

The high pH of lime creates an inhospitable environment for mold and bacteria. This is the same reason lime has been used in buildings for centuries — it's antimicrobial by chemistry.

Beautiful Organic Depth

Lime paint has a soft, luminous quality that shifts with light throughout the day. The slight translucency creates natural variation that makes walls feel alive — something flat modern paint never achieves.

Ages Beautifully

Unlike modern paint that yellows, chips, and fades uniformly, lime paint weathers with character. On exterior surfaces especially, it develops a gentle patina that becomes more beautiful over time.

Easy to Touch Up

Lime paint can be refreshed or touched up without the seam lines that plague modern paints. Its organic variation means repairs blend naturally — a coat over the whole wall restores it entirely.

Honest Comparison

Lime Paint vs.
Venetian Plaster

Lime Paint
Natural · Matte · Breathable
  • Fully breathable — great for masonry
  • Zero VOCs, 100% natural
  • Ideal for exterior and historic walls
  • ~ Matte only — limited sheen options
  • ~ Less durable than plaster finishes
  • ~ Requires more frequent reapplication
  • ~ Not suitable for wet areas
Best for: exterior masonry, historic homes, and interiors where a very soft, natural matte is the goal.

Where It Works Best

The Right Places
for Lime Paint

Exterior walls

Exterior Brick & Stone

The classic application. Lime paint protects and beautifies exterior masonry while allowing moisture to escape — the way old buildings were always meant to breathe.

Period properties

Historic & Period Homes

Pre-war homes with solid masonry walls need lime-compatible finishes. Modern paint can trap moisture and cause long-term damage. Lime paint is the correct, sympathetic solution.

Feature walls

Interior Feature Walls

A lime-washed feature wall adds organic softness and depth without the investment of full plaster. Bedrooms and living rooms particularly benefit from the gentle, chalky finish.

Natural interiors

Eco & Natural Interiors

For homes designed around natural, non-toxic materials — lime paint pairs beautifully with timber, stone, and clay. Zero chemicals, zero compromise.

Hallways

Hallways & Ancillary Spaces

Where impact matters less than atmosphere, lime paint creates a quiet, cohesive backdrop that connects spaces without competing with the rooms it leads to.

Garden buildings

Outbuildings & Garden Rooms

Sheds, garden studios, and outbuildings benefit from lime paint's breathability and natural aesthetic. It looks at home in landscape and holds up well to exterior conditions.

Our Honest Advice

When We'd Recommend
Something Different

Amy believes in giving honest advice, not just taking every job. Lime paint is a beautiful finish — but it's not always the best choice for every project.

For most interior walls, Venetian plaster delivers everything lime paint offers — breathability, natural lime base, mold resistance, zero VOCs — plus significantly greater depth, durability, and visual impact. It's a better long-term investment for most homeowners.

Amy will always tell you which finish is genuinely right for your project, your walls, and your goals. No upselling. Just honest expertise.

Lime paint is a great choice when…
  • Your home is pre-war with solid masonry walls that need to breathe
  • You're finishing exterior brick, stone, or render
  • You specifically want a very soft, flat matte — not sheen or texture
  • The project is in a low-traffic area where durability is less critical
  • For most other interiors, Venetian plaster is the better investment
  • For showers and wet areas, Tadelakt is the correct choice

How It Works

From Consultation
to Finished Wall

1

Consultation

Amy reviews your space and goals. She'll be honest about whether lime paint is the best choice — or whether Venetian plaster would serve you better.

2

Surface Assessment

The substrate is assessed for compatibility. Lime paint works best on masonry, plaster, and lime-compatible surfaces. Preparation is everything.

3

Colour Selection

Natural pigments are mixed to your chosen tone. Because lime paint dries lighter, Amy creates test patches so you can see the actual result before committing.

4

Application

Applied by brush in thin, cross-hatched coats — typically two to three layers. Each coat is worked in while still wet for organic variation and soft depth.

Common Questions

Everything You Want
to Know

Lime paint is less well-known than conventional finishes and people often have questions. Here are the ones Amy hears most often.

Is lime paint the same as Venetian plaster? +
They share the same base material — natural lime — but they're very different finishes. Lime paint is a wash applied with a brush, creating a flat matte surface. Venetian plaster is a thicker plaster applied with a trowel and burnished to create depth, texture, and sheen. For most interior projects, Venetian plaster offers a significantly superior result.
Can lime paint go over regular painted walls? +
It depends on what's underneath. Lime paint needs a porous, breathable surface to bond correctly. Over modern acrylic or vinyl paints, it often doesn't adhere properly. A surface assessment is essential — Amy will evaluate your walls during consultation and advise on whether preparation or an alternative finish is needed.
Why do you recommend Venetian plaster over lime paint for most projects? +
Both are natural, lime-based, and breathable. But Venetian plaster has far greater depth, texture options, and durability. It's more forgiving in terms of surface compatibility and performs much better in living spaces that see daily use. Lime paint is the right choice for specific applications — exterior masonry, historic walls, very soft interiors — but for most interior walls, Venetian plaster is simply the better investment.
How long does lime paint last? +
On exterior masonry, lime paint is extremely durable and can last many years before needing refreshing. Internally, it's softer and less scuff-resistant than plaster — high-traffic areas may need touching up more frequently. In low-traffic spaces like bedrooms, it can last many years without attention.
Is lime paint safe for children and allergy sufferers? +
Yes — once fully cured, lime paint contains no VOCs, no synthetic binders, and no harmful off-gassing. It's one of the safest wall finishes available for indoor air quality. The antimicrobial properties of lime also help suppress mold, which is beneficial for allergy sufferers.
Do you serve areas outside Albany? +
Yes — Amy serves homeowners, designers, and contractors across all of Oregon. Travel for the right project is always possible. Get in touch and tell us about what you have in mind.
